Liberal Cartoons

In December of 2012 a bipartisan group of 8 congressmen and women got together to discuss proposals for a new immigration plan. The plan was proposed on January 28, 2013. The plan allows a path to citizenship, while also enforcing tighter border and visa controls. Republican senators such as Lamar Smith and Steve Stockman of Texas, and Wisconsin’s Jim Sensenbrenner were some of the first to oppose it. They attacked the senate’s proposal, each stating that they will not support a plan that includes amnesty. While the majority of Republicans do not support this plan, what needs to be remembered is that the proposal came from a bipartisan group which did consists of Republicans as well.

Title: Republicans and Immigration Pinata         Cartoon#: 1
What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
A Mexican pinata is hanging above a blindfolded elephant, which represents the Republican party. The elephant is whacking its own head instead of the pinata, over and over again. President Obama is watching, saying, “when he tires of that, we’ll do immigration reform.”

Tone of the cartoon:
1) Neutral framing of undocumented immigrants
2) Negative framing of the Republican Party
What "Reality" is constructed/framed about immigration/immigrants?
This cartoon shows how the Republican and Democratic party can’t seem to agree on the topic of immigration. It depicts the Republican Party like they are “blind” to the issue, and so stupid that they keep hitting themselves. It frames Republicans in a negative light by saying that their proposed laws on immigration will only end up hurting themselves.

There is a common misconception that illegal immigrants are, “taking” American jobs. This claim has captivated many American’s into believing it as shown in the above cartoon. This claim has gone so far as to the creation of a Reclaim American Jobs Caucus in the House, including 41 members. But economists have brought up the fact that rather than taking jobs from native born and/or legal immigrants, illegal immigrants have created them. David Griswold, director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, wrote in an article for Commentary Magazine: The addition of low-skilled immigrants expands the size of the overall economy, creating higher-wage openings for managers, craftsmen, accountants, and the like. The net result is a greater financial reward and relatively more opportunities for those Americans who finish high school”(Factcheck.org/Griswold). The above cartoon also brings up the point that Americans have been blaming immigrants for doing the exact same thing that they did to the natives before them. We deem this cartoon positive in that it brings up the point that illegal immigrants are not taking our jobs and in reality we took Americas real Natives jobs and resources and does not use and derogatory terms.

Title of the cartoon: N/A                                    Cartoon#: 5
What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
In this cartoon we see what seems to be a shadow of an officer, questioning the Statue of Liberty. The officer is asking the Statue of liberty, “Excuse me ma’am do you have your papers? Someone said you may be from France.” In the cartoon the Statue of Liberty is representing an immigrant because the statue was a gift from the French.

Tone of Cartoon:
1)Positive framing of undocumented workers.
2)Negative framing of immigration policies.
What "reality" is constructed/framed about immigration/immigrants?
This cartoon is represents how unsettle the immigration form has been in the past years. The officer is representing the government and how confused they themselves are about the immigration reform. The officer and the question he’s asking may also represent the Arizona Law that allows police officers to pull anyone who doesn’t appear American over. The statue of Liberty is a powerful symbol of the United States that represents freedom. The cartoonist may have used the Statue of Liberty to point out the freedom that is taken away from some people because the government can’t seem to get the immigration form correct.

Title of the cartoon: Swing-State Latinos could end Mitt Romney’s White house dream
Cartoon #: 6
What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?

In this cartoon Mitt Romney is wearing a sombrero and yelling his anti-immigration plans in front of Hispanic crowd. The Hispanics’ faces look really offended and confused. The small child is asking his parents who the drunk guy (Mitt Romney) is, because the things he is saying makes him seem drunk. On the top left corner it says “How do you say awkward in Spanish?” which clarifies how awkward Mitt Romney is, when it comes to getting Hispanic voters.

Tone of Cartoon:
1)Positive framing of undocumented workers.
2)Negative framing of immigration policies.
What "reality" is constructed/framed about immigration/immigrants?
This cartoon illustrates how ignorant Mitt Romney seems in the eyes of the Hispanic voters. Mitt Romney wants illegal immigrants out of the country, so he came up with a plan that will let immigrants self-deport themselves. This plan brushed away most if not all of the Hispanic voters for Mitt Romney in the 2012 elections. The cartoon illustrates what it would look like if Mitt Romney talked about his plans in front of Hispanics, to try to get their vote. The Hispanic community in the cartoon looks shocked, and confused, the same way they looked when Mitt Romney tried to get the Hispanic votes. Just like the corner of the cartoon says, it was an awkward situation when it came to Mitt Romney and the Hispanic voters in the 2012 elections.

This Chart clearly shows us how where the Latino and other cultural votes are going, and how important it is to have their vote. 44% of the voters who voted for Obama in the 2012 elections where non-white, and that's a big factor, in Romney losing the elections.

Title of the cartoon: McCain on Illegal Immigrants
Cartoon#: 7
What action is taking place in the cartoon? What is the context?
This cartoon is presenting a big flood. A cow and a farmer are sitting on top of a floating farmhouse.

Tone of the cartoon:
1) Negative framing of Senator McCain
2) Positive framing fo undocumented workers
What "reality" is constructed/framed about immigration/immigrants?
This cartoon points out that Senator McCain is blaming the immigrants for all the problems in the United States. As he sees it, every situation is relating to the immigrants. Despite that this cartoons' publication is from 2011, it still applies very well to the position of Senator McCain disrespecting the undocumented workers.
