After analyzing these cartoons I have come to the conclusion that there is a problem in the United States that is in need of fixing. I feel as though we all like to think of the “American Dream”. A place where you can come from nothing and amount to something, or a place of diversity where those from other countries can come here for refuge, or education. A place where you are welcomed by Lady Liberty, quite literally. We portray this image, but the truth is that its not that easy. After viewing and researching these cartoons I’ve noticed that we live in a country where discrimination is very prevalent, and where our government can’t make an agreement. Granted there needs to be policies and laws, but It doesn’t make sense for us to try to judge or understand immigrants when we don’t even understand the policies of our own government. Republicans are attacking Democratic proposals by saying it’s “Amnesty”, while Democrats attack Republicans as people who discriminate against immigrants and are unwilling to let them in. I've found that we are forced to think on the extremes. As U.S. citizens and Immigrants we are all confused alike.

In ending, I’ll leave you with one more cartoon by Christopher Weyant that seems to sum up this conclusion.
This project taught me some things that I didn't know, and a lot of things actually surprised me. I knew that Latinos had a pretty big say in the elections, but I didn't think they had as much as they actually do have,. Another new thing that I learned about was the I.D cards in Los Angeles. I think this is great idea, and a good way to help undocumented workers who are struggling to keep themselves and there money safe. I believe that illegal immigrants who are working hard, and contributing to this nation should be given the right to live here. My parents are great people and great examples of why immigrants come to this country, and that is why I am on the liberal side of things. But, I also feel that illegal immigrants who are committing crime, should get deported, not only are they hurting this nation, but making every other immigrant out there look bad. Overall, this project made me realize how much power and meaning cartoons have. Just by looking at all my cartoons, I knew if they were conservative or liberal, what message they were trying to give, and some stirred my emotions. - Jose David Alvarado
