Key Terms

These Key Terms need to be understood in order to fully grasp and understand the message behind the following immigration cartoons.

Amnesty: A government pardon for committing illegal offenses. Conservatives believe that every illegal immigrant should not be given the amnesty that the government has been giving them in the past years.

Conservatives: The republican party is conservative, they like to follow traditional rules and values. They don't like change in their culture, meaning they are against illegal immigration and immigrants. Usually conservative states like Arizona enforce strong laws against immigrants.

Immigrants: People who move into a different country and live there permanently. When people sneak into a different country, they are doing it illegally and that is why they get the term illegal immigrants.

Liberals: The democratic party is liberal, they believe that the government should make everything fair and equal for everyone. They usually support immigrants, and fight to get them their rights as long as they are behaving and contributing to the united states.

Racism: Bias opinions or negative judgment  towards a certain group of people based on the color of their skin. Illegal immigrants experience a lot of racism, especially from conservatives who believe they shouldn't be in the United States.

Undocumented workers: An illegal immigrant who doesn't have documentation that they are citizens or were born in America. Documentation are needed to prove that they can work or are working legally.
